DEWALT has optimized both of these tools to withstand daily jobsite wear and tear. The 1/2-inch hammer drill’s high-power, high-efficiency motor delivers 535 unit watts out for superior performance in light and medium drilling applications. A 1/2-inch ratcheting chuck with carbide inserts provides superior bit-gripping strength—reducing slippage during high-torque applications—thus providing longer tool life. The hammer drill/driver’s patented three-speed (0-575; 0-1,350; and 0-2,000 RPM), all-metal transmission allows users to select the appropriate speed for the job at hand and is up to 30 percent faster than current hammer drill/drivers on the market. Meanwhile, the impact driver’s robust motor delivers 2,800 RPM—up to 43 percent faster than current impact drivers on the market. Its one-handed loading 1/4-inch hex chuck accepts and holds 1-inch bit tips for convenient fastening in tight spaces. Research shows that impact drivers are growing in popularity largely because of their smaller size and lack of kickback (or reactionary torque) thanks to the impact mechanism within the tool. Combined with its 5.55-inch length and 3.4-pound weight, the premium impact driver packs a serious punch in a small package.
Endurance and Ease of Use
DEWALT-designed electronics have been built into both tools’ switches to provide maximum life for the tools and batteries by helping to protect them from overheating, overloading, and deep discharge during use. The 20-volt’s lithium-ion batteries provide up to 35 percent more runtime than existing 18-volt lithium-ion battery technology, and the included Energy Star-qualified charger has dual voltage capabilities and it is compatible with both 12-volt max and 20-volt max DEWALT lithium-ion batteries. The tools’ slim handles fit easily into users’ hands, increasing the level of comfort during the course of long jobs, and the bright built-in LED work lights above the triggers have a 20-second delay that improves visibility in dimly lit spaces.

So, when I bought it from him in 2000 it was already a few years old. Not surprisingly, after all those years, the NiCad batteries were beginning to fail and I initially considered just replacing them. However, when I looked at how much two new batteries would cost and then factored in the heavy use the drill had received (by then I had remodeled 2 houses with it), I decided to look at a replacement model. Although I had looked at other brands, particularly Milwaukee and Makita, because of how well my original DeWalt had held up I decided I would stick with a brand I knew I could trust. Although I shopped around, I couldn't really find any "deals" (that is, discounts) on this product, but I needed to buy it anyway because I had started another house remodel and I knew I was going to need a drill sooner... Of course, the standard torque adjustment collar is right next to the control collar. In addition, there are the standard three speed settings as well as a helpful worklight and an attachable side handle. So far these both work great, I've used them for a few small projects around the house (such as replacing a door/drilling deadbolt holes etc) and these guys made short work of it. No surprise that they were plenty powerful, but what has been surprising is battery life. Two weeks later and neither tool needs a recharge yet.I wish the kit had come with hard cases rather than the bag that it included, otherwise it's great! |
